Bravely Default Demo: What You Need to Know (Spoiler-free)

With the North American debut of the demo for Bravely Default (the full version releases next month), many fans of Square Enix have finally gotten to experience a taste of what the rest of the world has already had access to. Being a spiritual successor to the early Final Fantasy games, especially Final Fantasy V, has led to this title being one of the most anticipated Japanese RPG's in quite some time.

The demo for Bravely Default shifts away from the "start the game in the demo and then continue in the retail release" models recently popularized by the Etrian Odyssey series. Instead of giving you a taste of the full game, you instead find yourself on a side-quest of sorts that is not found in the full release. You'll find a handful of jobs (classes) that your characters can use right off the bat, as well as a smattering of the features that you'll find in the retail version. By completing quests in the demo, you'll unlock bonus items that can be imported into the full game. These bonuses also include a limited number of "townsfolk" that can be obtained via StreetPass hits within the demo, which will make it easier to complete the construction of your in-game town once you purchase the game.

Here's the complete list of what you can import from the demo to the full release, along with what you need to do in the demo to get them (while avoiding spoilers):

  1. Play the demo (simply start the game)
    • 2x Antidote
    • 2x Echo Herb
    • 2x Eye Drops
  2. Fully restore the in-game town
    • 1x Bronze Bangle
    • 2x Phoenix Down
  3. Defeat the first mini-boss
    • 1x Hi-Potion
    • 3x Potion
  4. Defeat the second mini-boss
    • 1x Ether
    • 1x Staff
  5. Defeat the third mini-boss
    • 1x Ether
    • 1x Rod
  6. Defeat the first boss
    • 1x Bronze Helm
    • 1x Leather Armor
  7. Defeat the second boss
    • 1x Broadsword
    • 1x Buckler
  8. Obtain villagers via StreetPass
    • Begin the game with the number of villagers you obtained in the demo (maximum of 20)
Note that your characters won't import to the full version (as you start with only Freelancer unlocked and four Level 1 characters in the full game), so feel free to play around with the classes as much as you like.

Note that if you don't get StreetPass hits very often, there is an exploit that can be used to get the villagers you need. Finding information on said exploit is left as an exercise for the reader. :)
